The alley off Saint-Laurent was a graveyard of flickering neon and the smell of ozone.
In the Montreal of 2088, Katherine was a ghost. Her life was a repetitive loop of disappearing, every night a new pod, every morning a neural wipe. She was a drifter who specialized in the art of withdrawal. She didn’t want to be found, and she didn’t want to be known. Her routine was simple: scavenge for data, trade for credits, and move before the shadows caught up.
But as disconnected as she was, she had a vice: information. She spent her hours in the gritty corners of the city, pulling discarded data-shards from the trash, searching for a truth she couldn’t quite name. The disruption came at the Place-des-Arts ruins. She wasn’t looking for a physical object, but there it was: a brass key, cold and heavy, tucked inside a corrupted server-brick. It was a relic, out of place in a digital city. As her fingers brushed the metal, her HUD flickered: “Connection requested: The Architect.”
Usually, Katherine would have been gone before the message cleared. But this time, she didn’t flinch. The curiosity was a spark she hadn’t felt in years. She wasn’t running anymore; she was looking for an answer.
